Amit Berman’s (b.1994) work is deeply autobiographical, reflecting his personal experiences and relationships through his own perspective or those of his partner and past partners. His practice explores themes of intimacy, longing, and the fleeting beauty of mundane moments, capturing their emotional resonance through vivid, painterly expression. For Berman, painting is both a ritual and a meditative process, allowing him to navigate universal feelings such as love, fear, anxiety, and the search for connection.
At the core of his work lies a Romantic sensibility, where nature is idealized as a space of transformation and individuality. Movement, vitality, and the depiction of beauty are central to his artistic language, blending an almost nostalgic reverence for nature with a contemporary lens. Berman often draws upon art historical references, linking real-life moments with symbolic imagery that enriches his storytelling. Each painting begins with a specific image in mind, tied to his emotional landscape and current experiences, creating works that are both personal and universally resonant.
Berman was recently part of ‘I confini dell’alterità / The Contours of Otherness at the Jewish Museum Venice during the 2024 Venice Biennale and was selected for prestigious residencies at The Cabin in Los Angeles (November 2024) and Cabane Georgina in Marseille (July 2024). His upcoming exhibitions include group shows in Milano at Tube Hall in February 2025 and at the Haifa Museum of Contemporary in April 2025.
